Cagayan de Oro’s Saturday Night Live presents OPEN MIC
Indie is more than just music… it’s a scene.
Abbreviated from “independent,” indie has become an entire genre that includes music, movies, clothing styles, and other facets of culture. It is characterized by its separation from commercial institutions and mainstream lines, and is often considered synonymous to alternative styles.
It is also a term used to describe independence from major commercial record labels and an autonomous, Do-It-Yourself approach to recording and publishing.
Cagayan de Oro has a lot of independent musicians that play really good songs which mostly are their own compositions. They rely on free publicity or just the “word of mouth” to be heard.
I remember around year 2001-2002 there used to be a place named Flips here in Cagayan de Oro which aimed to reunite the indie bands, then came Punchbowl around 2003-2004. Then that was about it. It kinda died here in our city and some other places in Mindanao.
Joseph Dela Cerna Agcopra of Tourjack, Loremer Lagrosas Jr. and Bam Roa of K9 came up with an idea to reunite, again, the Indie Bands in Cagayan de Oro and our neighboring provinces. They planned to launch it early March of this year as a street party and was going to name it March of the Machines but they had some uncontrollable events, and needed papers to deal with from the government, that led to the delay.
March 27, 2010, it got finally launched as Saturday Night Live presents OPEN MIC – with the help of friends and band members of K9, Calypso, and Tourjack.

Open Mic is not a production but a venue where local indie bands can perform. Their main mission and vision is to reunite all local indie bands and have a venue for each one to perform and show off what they got. They are open every Saturday by 8pm. Location is at the Capitol Park Cafe – along Velez Highway near McArthur Park and Tennis Court.
So far, Open Mic has been successfully going on for over a month now. 4 of Iligan City’s best bands even came along to play - namely Inburn, Psykbox, Drunkenstein, and Purple Parachutes.
Open Mic would like to thank their sponsors – for making everything possible every Saturday night: San Miguel Corporation – for the booze, Bammers Studio – for the recording, rental and rehearsal venue, and LRS Lights & Sounds – for the on site lights and sounds and instruments.
Calling out all Kagay-anon’s let’s support local indie music!
To all indie bands, Padayun Kagay-anon, rakenrol! \m/
